| Issue: | 508 Compliance Issues: Keyboards/Screen Readers/JavaScript Disabled Browsers Can't Access Menus |
| Browser: | All |
| Platform: | All |
| Description: | Menus created
by HierMenus cannot be accessed by keyboard (only mouse rollovers and clicks).
Additionally, screen readers are unable to "see" and read
the HierMenu items. Both of these issues are key issues for sites that adhere
to section 508 compliance laws. Additionally, as noted on our
compatiblity page, browsers that
specifically have JavaScript disabled will not be able to access menus created
with HierMenus. |
| Discussion: | Because of the above
mentioned HierMenus restrictions, we typically recommend against the use of
permanently visible menus. Instead, by implementing your sites using pop up
menus from HTML links (the pop ups must be activated on mouse rollovers, not
clicks), you provide at least a top level of links (the actual in-page HTML
links) that can be accessed by those with disabilities and/or have JavaScript
disabled. The menus themselves, if and when they popup, will still suffer from
the restrictions noted above; but at least the user will still be able to
navigate your site by following the top-level, in-page links that you've provided.
