Setting Up HierMenus

To setup version 6 of HierMenus for use on your site, you must follow these three basic steps: Install the scripts on your server, create and install your configuration file, and then apply the scripts to your HTML pages. While each of these tasks have exceptions here and there depending on exactly what you intend to do (and how you choose to do it), the vast majority of HierMenus installations will simply follow the recommendations provided within these instructions. Where those exceptions do exist we will note them, often with links to pages that further describe the issue in detail.

As we go through the setup instructions, we will assume a basic installation that follows all of our main recommendations; i.e., we will assume, for example, that the directories created in step 1 (installing the scripts on your server) are those that we recommended when we discuss the application of the scripts to your Web pages in step 3. While you are welcome to jump back and forth between steps, for best results we recommend that you review these instructions in their entirety and in order at least once before you begin the actual work.

Note that the instructions presented here pertain only to version 6 of HierMenus. If you are using an older version of HierMenus (versions 4 or 5) visit our Documentation Archive for relevant information.

1.) Installing the Scripts on your Server
The instructions here include the creation of server directories and uploading of files, as well as information describing the differences between the verbose and optimized script sets. Configuration of the HM_Loader.js file is also discussed in this step.

2.) Creating a Configuration File
Instructions for creating your own functional and object based version 6 configuration file, the heart of any HierMenus implementation. This step is most likely where you will spend most of your time.

3.) Applying HierMenus to Your Pages
Having created a configuration file capable of producing menus in the shapes and styles that you want, it's time to add the necessary code to your HTML pages to enable the menu displays themselves. The majority of the cross-frames specific instructions are presented in this section, including a look at the difference between the standard and alternate cross-frame implementation methods.

Advanced Topics
These are not part of the standard setup instructions per se; nevertheless you may find the information here helpful depending on your more advanced needs.
